once in awhile I get mail from a past owner at my place. I usually mark it as 'return to sender'. Also that the person 'moved' on the mail & place it back in my mailbox. I noticed the mail person threw it out in the trash near the mail boxes. Does canada post return those marked letters back to the sender? or is it pointless for me to do so? Just curious since I don't want more mail again in the future that needs returning...thanks:)

I am surprised that the Canada Post employee would just throw out a letter like that. The standard policy for bills and letters is to send it back to the original sender (if possible) so they know for next time and are not wasting their efforts in sending someone mail who is no longer there.

Now perhaps if you are receiving things like a catalogue, magazine subscription, or junk mail addressed to the former owner, perhaps Canada Post simply tosses that out. But I would be very surprised if it was legal for them to simply throw someone else's mail in the trash. I would expect that has to be brought back to the depot and at the very least disposed of in a way that prevents someone from commiting identify theft by taking those letters and opening them to grab confidential information.

You may want to contact Canada Post at 1-866-607-6301, and just ask them if what is happening with that return to sender mail in your area is permitted. Your mail carrier may be cutting corners so they don't have to bring all that undelivered mail back to the depot.

An apartment building Which has permanent residents. But also runs as a hotel, where they have hotel guests. Well suffice to say, if the body corporate is not paying the hotel staff wages, and the hotel is. Why should hotel staff process mail. Its not their job. If its an issue. An agreement has to be made for some fee for mail sorting, payed by the body corporate , the fee passed onto permanent residents. You can not expect hotel staff to sort mail, if they have nothing to do with thebody corporate, and dont work for the body corporate. Whatever happened to designated mailboxes to solve this issue. Thats what everyone else has. To solve the mail sorting issue. The amount of time and money these people spend attempting to sort the mess out and the red tape behind it. They could have just built a whole bunch of numbered mailboxes for the postie to deliver into. Im sure the postie does not need that confusion One must agree, an address is an address. If permanent people live there, then no it should not be sent back to sender. At no time should permanent residents mail be sent back to sender. Body corporate MUST call an urgent meeting with the hotel to sort the issue out. People pay strata fees for a reason. Im sure the hotel pays rental or fees as well. Urgent meetings for urgent business. Which must be settled.

They use to but not anymore. I believe the current policy is Business mail (especially bulk rate mail where the sender gets a Discount rate) is no longer returned. They shouldn't be carelessly disposing it right in your garbage though, that's could lead to identity theft problem's.

Personal mail is returned to sender. I have received Christmas Cards back.
